Background: Mesoporphyrin IX dihydrochloride is a natural product and specialty chemical which displays antimicrobial properties.1 Mesoporphyrin IX dihydrochloride exhibits photosensitizer properties.2 Mesoporphyrin IX dihydrochloride is structurally similar to protoporphyrin IX, but is chemically more stable due to the lack of the highly chemically reactive vinyl groups. Peptide conjugates of mesoporphyrin IX targeting EGFR have been described.3 A mesoporphyrin IX functionalized PEG was synthesized and demonstrated oxygen phosensitization.4 Mesoporphyrin IX has been used for the construction of highly efficient dye sensitized solar cells.5 The photophysics of mesoporphyrin IX in solution and as a sol-gel have been reported.6
